Simplex Multi-Exposure

The Simplex is an early camera for 35 mm film, made by the Multi-Speed Shutter Company, a maker of shutters and cine projectors in New York.[1][2] An example was offered for sale (but not sold) at Westlicht together with advertisements from 1914;[3] the auctioneer's notes describe the Simplex as the first production camera for 24x36mm exposures on 35mm film. The example shown at Westlicht has a Bausch and Lomb 50 mm f/3.5 Tessar with helical focusing, and a Compound shutter.[3]
Notes on the camera at Cameraquest state that there were four distinct models:[2]
- with a folding viewfinder;
- with a telescopic finder, as at Westlicht;[3]
- with the lever allowing half- and full-frame exposures (the Simplex Special)
- with a simple frame-finder (the Simplex B, shown at Cameraquest)
Only twenty-seven copies of the camera were made.[3]
