The Sony MVC-C1 was a 1988 electronic stills camera, but not a "digital camera"—up to 50 images are saved as single frames of analog, standard-definition television video, onto special micro floppy disks which Sony called Mavipak. This was Sony's first consumer-oriented[1] realization of a the prototype 1981 Mavica concept (although it followed the costly and full-featured Sony Mavica MVC-A7AF).

The lens does not offer either zoom or focusing, and the user is instructed to keep at least 5 feet or 1.5 meters from the subject. The Sony Mavica MVC-A10 quickly followed, adding a closer focus setting, plus a feature where a very short audio recording could be paired with any captured image.

Notes

  1. The price is quoted as USD $650 in Popular Photography's December, 1989 index to current camera models (Vol. 96, No. 12; page 106) via Google Books.
