Name

The GNU Image Manipulation Program, more commonly known as GIMP

Yes indeed. I'd be willing to bet that the number of uses of "GIMP" divided by the number of uses of "GNU Image Manipulation Program" far exceeds the number of uses of "SLR" divided by the number of uses of "single-lens reflex". Any particular reason to title this the long way? -- Hoarier 17:12, 10 February 2012 (PST)

I would have picked GIMP too. I had no idea the page existed until I saw it go by in the recent changes log this morning and decided to throw in some more info. If you want to change the page name to GIMP, I've got no objection; that's the name most people will recognize. Steevithak 18:51, 10 February 2012 (PST)
Let's give Vox time to chime in here. -- Hoarier 19:23, 10 February 2012 (PST)

That's fine with me. I only started the page under the longer name because the "wanted page" entry used it.--Vox 19:44, 10 February 2012 (PST)

Evidence

The most famous of these is CinePaint (previously called Film GIMP), which became widely used for motion picture visual effects and animation, including well-known films such as the Harry Potter series, The Last Samurai, The Lord of the Rings, and others.

Independent, disinterested, credible evidence for this, please. -- Hoarier 20:08, 10 February 2012 (PST)

PS the evidence given was "CinePaint website". Not only is this an unsatisfactory source for such a claim -- it isn't even a source. Or anyway, I don't see it making this claim. But, as I said, even if it did make this claim, this would be poor evidence indeed.

I do see that there is lots of chitchat on the web about this claim. But chitchat doesn't hack it. -- Hoarier 22:21, 10 February 2012 (PST)

Fair enough, let me see what else I can find Steevithak 07:12, 11 February 2012 (PST)
Found a printed book and a university paper, hopefully those will work. Steevithak 08:03, 11 February 2012 (PST)
Good! Sorry if I sounded rather bitchy.
Incidentally, the software that I use in addition to GIMP is GraphicsMagick, a superior fork (sounds familiar?) of the probably better known ImageMagick. But I'm not sure that there's much to say in C-W about either. Anyway, if you happen not to be familiar with one or other of the pair, take a look. -- Hoarier 16:41, 11 February 2012 (PST)
